USS Shields

Greyhound of the Sea

Destroyer Shields, knifing through the white-capped Pacific epitomizes many of the elements that give a destroyerman high pride in his ship.

She shows power, grace, speed, and drive.    She is lithe and swift, clean and sharp, and as smooth and menacing as a greyhound's tooth.

This unusually fine sketch of a destroyer at sea is typical of scenes familiar to all destroyermen—a fast ship in a foaming sea making haste to reach her goal.
